History and Significance

The Kargil War started on May 3, 1999 and came to an end on July 26, 1999. On July 14, 1999 Kargil War, also known as “Operation Vijay”, was declared victorious. The war was between Pakistan and India. The war began as the Pakistani militants, disguised as Kashmiri citizens and invaded Indian territory at the Indian side of the Line of Control(LOC).

The main reason for Pakistan’s intrusions is to occupy Kashmir and cut off the Srinagar-Leh highway, which further leads to the disruption of Indian supplies to the Siachen glacier and Ladakh regions.

500 soldiers sacrificed their lives, and many fought selflessly and made the war successful by sending the Pakistani intruders and regaining the occupied territories. Since July 26, 1999, Kargil Vijay Diwas has been celebrated, marking the victory of India and making the world know the strength of India. The day is celebrated to remember and honour the sacrifices made by the soldiers during the war.

To commemorate the victory of the Kargil War, the Kargil War Memorial was built at Dras in 2000 by the Indian Army. In 2014, the National War Memorial was built near the India Gate as a tribute to every Indian soldier who lost their life during the war.  Every year, on Kargil Vijay Diwas Prime Minister visits the National War Memorial and pays homage and witnesses the parades, speeches and cultural activities. The whole nation mourns for their demise and pays tribute to the soldiers.

Key Lessons from the Kargil War for Today’s Citizens

The Kargil War is not just a war, but also offers invaluable life lessons that help us be responsible citizens of India. The following are the major takeaways that one should learn from the Kargil War.

  • Love towards the Nation

The Kargil soldiers made us know what patriotism looks like and what one can achieve if they have immense love towards their country. The soldiers made us learn that nothing is important than the nation’s needs. Their sacrifice made every citizen of the country abide by the “Nation first, Self last” notion and work towards making our country a better place in all ways.

  • Unity is the Strength

The war wouldn’t have been successful if the Indian militants lacked unity. The soldiers fought as one force and evolved victorious. Today we need to learn that anything can be achieved with unity and respecting diversity and maintaining harmony will always lead to overcoming any obstacles.

  • Selflessness and Sacrifices

We can see how many sacrifices were made by the soldiers to safeguard our country and how selflessly they fought. Not just the sacrifices of the soldiers, but the bravery of the families of soldiers for letting them serve the nation should also be acknowledged. As all of us do not have the opportunity to fight for the nation, let’s be kind to each other and help the poor through charity and bring a significant impact in society.

  • Perseverance and Determination

The determination and perseverance of Indian soldiers fighting against all odds and emerging victorious is commendable. Fighting in the harsh conditions and all the extremities makes us learn that facing adversity always leads to success.

From the Kargil War, we can learn that with true determination towards a goal, one can turn the challenges into victories.

  • Receptivity and Discipline

The Kargil War is not only a testament to the bravery of the soldiers but also their ability to adapt and respond with utmost discipline.
